becoming history, literally Technorati icon
When I heard about the demolishing of the wet market along the Kuching waterfront, my heart sank. I've been there almost everytime since I was young and practically grew up accustomed to the stench of the fish and the people. I still even remember once I slipped and ended up with fish stench all over my clothes, thinking back it was hilarious and "ewww" at the same time but sad as I recalled it now. Come to think of it, all those horrendous stenches, creeks on the floors stuffed with accumulated dead fishes and the slippery surface from running tap waters, along with their perverted fishmongers and their whistling and shouting will never be seen, heard or smell ever again. I remember I snapped a photo a few weeks ago. Amazing how those small little details we always take for granted always seemed more significant in the end. Bittersweet indeed. I drove past yesterday for a glimpse of the wet market before the demolishing work and of course snapped a few photos as well. There were tents set up for the police as the day before, civilians were making a fuss all over the demolition plans and from what I heard, a slight riot occurred along the road. Unused crates and boxes were all being cleared as you could see along with the road blocks put up against the public from interfering with the demolition works. Hopefully the Majilis Bandaraya Kuching Selatan (MBKS) have big development plans after the demolition for this part of the waterfront shoreline. I'll definitely be missing this memorable piece of Kuching's heritage.
